Feed the Hungry, Not the Ego

D r .  J a c k  B a r n a t h a n

Every single day 27,000 people, mostly children, die of hunger and the effects of malnutrition.  When I first learned of this fact, I was left truly speechless.

When considering how the public views "nutrition" as a "diet" or some new "magic protein bar" or "fat burning pill", it is no wonder that the "Fitness Industry" is not viewed as positively as we would hope.  The question really comes down to this; is Food something to nourish, to help people grow strong?  Or, is it something to feed the ego?

My mission is to transform the "Fitness "Industry" into a "Fitness Profession".  With Fitness Training Professionals and Wellness Coaches leading the way.  It is my deepest belief that a radical change can begin and change the world, but we have to start this movement where we are and one way would be for FOOD to be viewed as a solution for suffering, and not just protein powder in a can.

We'll enjoy our meals so much webassets/FARMWHEATGREEN.JPGmore when we know that NOT ONE PERSON is going to bed hungry tonight, and that OUR PROFESSION can lead the way toward this change.  Here are some suggestions for us all to do what we can, where we are with what we've got NOW make a lasting difference.

Discuss with your clients how changing their "attitude" toward food can impact so much more than just their waistline.  In my talks around the world I suggest that perhaps we should give more meaning to the concept of "saying grace" before a meal.  Being truly appreciative for what we have is the starting point.  Bless the food, the ability to nourish, to sustain healthy and growth and a strength that will be used to help others!  If we share some of our blessings with others, it might ma pause, value and eat more "thoughtfully" the good food on our plate.

And then our "waistline" will take care of itself.

Soon we will only choose only GOOD FOOD for our meals.  What a concept!  If we feel moved to make a contribution to our local food bank (most houses of worship will accept food for the hungry, and perhaps your fitness center / health care facility could develop a relationship with one in your town), or perhaps a contribution to one of the hard working food banks will impact both you and those you are helping in ways you can hardly imagine.

In my Studio if a Client needs a "favor" or some extra service that might have a nominal fee we'll suggest that as their "payment" they'll leave some cans of non-perishable food in the basket in the corner of our reception area.  You wouldn't believe how quickly it fills up, and the consciousness of giving, and respecting the POWER food has to heal, and truly strengthen, is made real.

Gandhi said we must "be the change we want to see in the world".  Lets put our "muscle" to work for good, and help lift up others as we grow ourselves.
