Coffee - Life's Blood!

E r n i e  R a z z a n o

For as long as I can remember I’ve been drinking coffee.  My mom actually followed in the steps of my grandmother on my father’s side by putting the black gold in my milk bottle.  I guess that’s why I’m probably one of very few people who can drink a rich cup of espresso right before I hit the hay and sleep like a baby.

As a retired Master Sergeant in the United States Air Force, my first job was Security Police.  That was back in the late 70’s, now they’re called Security Forces.  I did mostly swing and mid shifts.  After your last swing shift, which ended at 11pm, you would have 24 hours off before your first mid shift which started at 11pm.  I would remember asking the young airman I was relieving how old the coffee was.  He would proudly state “I just made it fresh, Sarge!”  After I slapped him upside his head I told him to make the coffee at the beginning of his shift NOT the end.  This is the mud you needed when pulling your first midnight shift.

Now I’m a little more discriminate about my cup of Joe.  They don’t call me Don Ernesto for nothing.  Thoroughly enjoying my evening demi tasse cup of espresso with a shot of anisette, that’s right, anisette, and if by some chance anisette isn’t available, sambuca will suffice quite nicely.

Yep, my blood type is java positive.  But what about the health risks, Ernie?  Well it’s time to put the debate to rest.  Coffee is actually good for you.  Overall, the research shows that coffee is far more healthful than it is harmful.  There are mega-doses of antioxidants in the coffee bean.  One study conducted at the University of Scranton concluded that the average adult consumes 1,299mg of antioxidants daily from coffee (tea came in second with 294mg).  Caffeine has been shown to reduce the risk of diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, and colon cancer.  It’s also used to treat headaches.  Just remember, like anything else, moderation is the key.  Caffeine has an 8-hour half-life.  That means if you drank 200mg, you would still have 100mg in your system 8 hours later and 50mg left hours after that.  Which means, 1 day after drinking that strong cup of coffee (or two or three…) you still have about 25mg of caffeine in your system.  This is why some people experience headaches until they get that first shot of java in them.

For you coffee critics out there here’s the downside (hey, I’m fair).  Caffeine is a mild addictive stimulant. And coffee does have modest cardiovascular effects such as increased heart rate, increased blood pressure, and occasional irregular heartbeat. But, the negative effects of coffee tend to emerge in excessive drinking so it is best to avoid heavy consumption.

So here’s mud in your eye!!!
